Serena Williams , one of the greatest tennis players of all time, is set to take on an exciting new venture in the entertainment industry as an executive producer for Netflix's upcoming series Carrie Soto is Back . The series, which is based on the bestselling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid , will feature Williams in a behind-the-scenes role, furthering her career after retirement from professional tennis.
The tennis legend, along with Caroline Currier, will work alongside Picturestart and Reid, with Fifth Season and Picturestart co-producing the series.

Set to follow the story of 37-year-old tennis icon Carrie Soto as she returns from retirement to defend her Grand Slam title against a young, up-and-coming rival rising star, the series is expected to offer a compelling glimpse into the world of elite tennis. While the character of Carrie Soto is not based on Williams, Reid has openly acknowledged that Williams' career has significantly influenced the character.

"My incredible respect for the Williams sisters is part of what interests me in tennis," Reid said when promoting the book in 2022. "I wouldn’t write a book about tennis without the influence of the absolute glory that has been Serena’s career, specifically her quest to achieve as many Grand Slam titles as she has."

This is not Williams’ first time working as an executive producer. In 2024, the tennis icon executive produced In the Arena: Serena Williams , a documentary series about her life and career. She also worked as an executive producer on the 2021 film King Richard , which focused on her father Richard Williams ’ pivotal role in her tennis career, and her sister Venus' journey.

In addition to her role as a producer, Williams has created a substantial business empire. Since retiring, Williams has focused much of her attention on her investment firm, Serena Ventures , which has become a significant force in the startup world. The firm has invested in more than 85 companies, 14 of which have reached the coveted "unicorn" status—valued at over $1 billion.

“I started thinking about what’s going to shape our world, whether it’s through transportation, technology, or consumer goods. Whatever that is, I wanted to be a part of shaping it,” Williams said. She has been investing for over 15 years and prides herself on being a hands-on investor. Her strategic investments have generated tremendous returns, and her portfolio includes notable companies like Impossible Foods, MasterClass, and the sports tech company Tonal.
