Makeup artist and extraordinaire Vikram Gaikwad passed away at the age of 61 in Mumbai this Saturday. The artist leaves behind countless films that he breathed essence into through makeup as his legacy. Gaikwad was one of the most celebrated makeup artists and was well sought after in South Indian, Bengali, and Marathi as well as Hindi cinema.
The icon passes awayThe news of Gaikwad passing was officially confirmed by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He took to his online social media platforms to pay his respects and pay tribute to the legendary artist, as shared by Pinkvilla.
He shared in his statement that Gaikwad was “a magician who brought characters to life on the silver screen”. He continued by saying that he is “an irreparable loss to the world of cinema and art”.
As confirmed by Gaikwad's brother, the make-up artist had been suffering from blood pressure-related health issues and had also been admitted into Hiranandani Hospital in Powai 3 days prior to his demise.
As shared by a report from PTI, his brother gave a statement saying, “He was quite well when he was admitted. We were not expecting that he would pass away so soon. His BP was going low, and we were not able to revive him.”
He is survived by his younger brother and his wife, as well as his daughter, along with the countless others whose lives he touched.

Heavy influence in Marathi, Bengali, and South Indian cinemaGaikwad did not limit himself to one sect of cinema in India and instead ventured into Marathi cinema as well. The artist is highly revered in the state and has worked on a lot of major and historical dramas that have become major successes throughout the year. Some of his most acclaimed Marathi films are ‘Balgandharva, Ani’… ‘Dr Kashinath Ghanekar’, ‘Pawankhind’, ‘Lokmanya’, ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’, ‘Fatteshikast’, and ‘Sher Shivraj. Rather than limiting himself to cinema, the artist also ventured into theatres as well. While he has worked in various plays, one of his most renowned is ‘Janata Raja’. The movie explores the life story of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The artist got to let out his creativity through makeup. He had also worked heavily in South Indian film, with the one most revered film that he had done being ‘Ponniyin Selvan: Part One and Two. In Bengali cinema, one of his most famous films, titled ‘Moner Manush’, even won him one of his many ‘National Film Awards for Best Makeup Artist’. Other than that, he also won the award for ‘Balgandharva’ and ‘Jaatishwar’ as well.
