UK households urged to buy £1 item to get rid of mould in winter

As temperatures plunge this November, households across the country will begin battling with mould, damp and condensation once more. Whether washing and drying clothes, having showers or cooking food, mould can form thanks to excess moisture in our houses, which becomes trapped with nowhere to go.

And as conditions turn colder and wetter outside, it's harder and harder to stop mould from spreading. But there is a way to banish mould around your windows this autumn and winter - using a £1 can of shaving foam.

Emily Caloe, Senior Buyer at Vonhaus, said: "Damp, humid environments are just the right breeding grounds for mould.

"This is compounded by poor ventilation, leaks, condensation and high humidity levels that all create the perfect breeding ground for mould spores, which can affect walls, ceilings, windows and other surfaces with unsightly stains and possible health hazards".

But smearing a thin layer of a £1 can shaving foam on your windows can help protect them against mould.

She added: "Start by giving your windows a good clean. Spread a thin layer of shaving cream over the glass; this shaving cream will act as a barrier, reducing condensation-a major cause of mould growth on windows. Let the foam sit for a few minutes until the excess is wiped off, and then let it sit with a thin, clear layer left behind.

"Alternatively, white, distilled vinegar- the cheapest brand from the supermarket will -will also help remove mould and kill its spores. Mix 1 part vinegar with 1 part water in a spray bottle and apply the solution to the affected area. Wipe down with a clean, damp cloth. If there is a smell of vinegar, don't worry-it will disappear within a few hours. And remember: always wear gloves and a mask when dealing with mould."
