Brown marks inside a bowl are often mistaken for from use, but it is more likely the result of , a natural mineral buildup caused by the water itself. You will know you are dealing with limescale if the marks keep appearin as it cannot be removed with bleach, since the chemicals will only lighten the stain rather than it.
Bleach will temporarily mask limescale, but the buildup will remain and can continue to trap residues such as bacteria and mould, making the toilet more difficult to keep over time. However, Kristi, a mum and founder of , has discovered a simple one-ingredient solution to get rid of limescale after she was sick of cleaning her toilet almost daily.
She said: "Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into the toilet bowl. Once the fizzing stops, brush and clean the grime away! Easy enough, right?
"Who knew that one little ingredient could get a toilet sparkling clean and save so much time? It's a lifesaver for me, and I'm sure you will agree that saving time is what each of us busy mums are looking for."
Alka-Seltzer tablets are aspirin that contains citric acid, an acidic substance that originally comes from fruit juice and is known to dissolve limescale naturally.
They also contain sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, which boosts the reaction of citric acid to create a fizzing action that will help break down the stubborn minerals clinging to the toilet.
This is an easy and surprisingly effective way to clean a toilet as it will not only remove limescale but can also get rid of any rust stains on the porcelain as well.
All you need to do is drop two tablets inside your toilet bowl, and then leave them to sit.
Let the tablets fizz for 15 to 30 minutes, then once the time is up, you can clean the toilet.
Simply take a toilet brush, lightly scrub at the stains and they should come away easily.
Flush the toilet to rinse away the cleaning solution and grime, then the toilet bowl should now be sparkling white.
Alka-Seltzer tablets can be found in the pain relief section of most supermarkets, but you can also pick up a packet from Boots for £4.90.
However, if you prefer, you can or a to clean away limescale without having to use any harsh chemicals.
