Katie Boulter teased her fiance Alex de Minaur after he pulled off a stunning point during a match at the Canadian Open. He faced Frances Tiafoe for a place in the quarter-finals and prevailed after three hard-fought sets. De Minaur will go up against another American player in the last eight, with Ben Shelton his next opponent.
During the second set against Tiafoe, the Aussie shocked everybody with a brilliant display of speed and control. He raced around the court to return several impossible shots and ended up winning the point when Tiafoe eventually found the net. The crowd erupted as De Minaur celebrated, lapping up the applause of the fans in the stadium.
Boulter, who is engaged to the 26-year-old, later took to X (formerly Twitter) with a teasing comment. She reposted a video of the dramatic point alongside the caption: "I'm not even fast I just read well," followed by a rolling-eyes emoji.
De Minaur was quick to respond to his wife-to-be, writing under her post: "It's called anticipation," alongside a shrugging emoji.
The couple have been together for around five years, having started their relationship at the height of the pandemic. They announced their engagement towards the end of last year, with Boulter revealing the news on Instagram.
De Minaur previously opened up on how their relationship came about, telling the Sydney Morning Herald: "Every time I saw Katie, she was smiling, happy, always in a good mood. That's what made me think she'd be approachable.
"Our relationship started at the beginning of COVID. I was in Spain under house arrest and she was in the UK, so we had months of talking on FaceTime.
"I think I realised this was becoming something special when I found myself wanting to talk to her all the time. Her companionship was something I'd been looking for: it gave me a sense of peace.
"Back then we weren't in the same tournaments, so we had to make the effort to meet up, flying out to wherever the other one was. Tennis is a stressful, high-drama sport and 90 per cent of our lives revolve around it."
Boulter, meanwhile, added: "We spend a lot of time with his family in Alicante in Spain and they've been so supportive, his mum messages me every single day. They come over for Wimbledon each year and my family are there, too.
"Growing up, I was always super close to my grandpa. He took me to training all the time. I always said to myself that if I can find someone who has half his heart, I'll be the luckiest woman in the world. I've found that person in Alex."
