After a blockbuster July, Bollywood is gearing up for an intense August as several high-profile films are set to release. Amid this flurry of activity, Siddharth Malhotra has announced a new release date for his upcoming film Param Sundari, which co-stars Janhvi Kapoor. Initially scheduled for July 25, the romantic drama will now hit theatres on August 29. However, this change in release date brings an unexpected challenge—a direct clash with the re-release of the 2005 classic Parineeta, starring Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt.
Param Sundari, a Maddock Films production directed by Tushar Jalota, is set to present a fresh on-screen pairing in Siddharth and Janhvi. But the excitement surrounding the film is now met with concern as Parineeta returns to theatres to commemorate its 20th anniversary. PVR INOX has announced that the iconic romantic drama will be re-released for a limited one-week run in select theatres across the country. The occasion also marks 20 years of Vidya Balan in the film industry and 50 years of Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films.
The digitally restored and remastered 8K version of Parineeta promises an enhanced visual and emotional experience. Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who produced the original, shared that the film is more than just a cinematic project—it represents a journey filled with love, pride, and music. He also praised late director Pradeep Sarkar for his heartfelt storytelling and artistic vision.
While re-released films have met mixed results at the box office in the past, Parineeta holds a special place in the hearts of audiences for its soulful music by Shantanu Moitra, emotional narrative, and rich Kolkata backdrop. Its nostalgic appeal, combined with the star power of Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, and Sanjay Dutt, could draw a significant crowd, especially among older audiences.
This resurgence could spell trouble for Param Sundari, particularly if Parineeta manages to create buzz and pull in audiences during its one-week theatrical run. Moreover, with several other major releases lined up around August 14, the competition will already be fierce. If Param Sundari struggles to stand out amidst such clutter and faces immediate rivalry from Parineeta, its box office potential could suffer notably.
