SMS Hospital News: Hair, which is considered to be a human's most precious jewel, what if it becomes a threat to life? Yes, something similar happened with a 14-year-old student of Agra. To save the life of this girl suffering from unbearable stomach pain and vomiting, her family had to admit her to SMS Hospital in Jaipur. Where the team of doctors saved her life by performing a complicated operation, but the case that came to light during this time surprised even the doctors treating her.
A strange habit put life in danger
This farmer family of Agra was worried for the past several years about their daughter, who is a 10th class student. Actually, she had developed a strange habit of eating soil, pieces of wood, chalk and thread. She started this habit in the sixth class after seeing other children, which gradually took a serious form. With the passage of time, she started having frequent stomach pain.
The problem increased a month ago, doctors were surprised
According to the information received, about a month ago, the girl suddenly started having severe pain in her stomach and she started vomiting continuously. After which she was brought to Sawai Man Singh Hospital. When the doctors did the initial examination, they felt something like a hard piece in the girl's stomach from the navel to the upper right part. When CECT (Contrast Enhanced CT) scan was done, it was found that there was swelling in the stomach and an abnormal object was present in it.
The operation lasted for 2 hours, 2 kg of hair 'trichobezoar' was removed
After this, the girl was operated upon, which lasted for about 2 hours. What the doctors told after the operation was really shocking. The doctors removed a huge bunch of trichobezoar i.e. hair from the girl's stomach, which was about 210 cm long. It was not just limited to the stomach, but had also spread to the small intestine.
The team conducting the operation tried to remove this huge clump in one piece so that there was no need to break it. If it was broken, several incisions would have to be made in the intestines, which could have caused more trouble to the patient. Ultimately the team of doctors successfully overcame this big challenge and saved the girl's life.
What is PICA syndrome?
Doctors said that the girl was suffering from PICA syndrome, in which a person has a desire to eat things that are not edible, such as hair, soil, chalk, etc. This is usually associated with nutritional deficiencies or mental health problems. In this case, this habit could have proved fatal for her. This incident makes us aware of the strange habits that we often ignore. Such serious conditions can be avoided by consulting a doctor in time and getting proper treatment.
