Broom (symbol of Lakshmi and purity)

In Hindu beliefs, the broom is not just a means of cleaning,

imagebut is considered a symbol of Goddess Lakshmi. It is a symbol of wealth, prosperity and purity in the house. Bringing a new broom into the house during Pitru Paksha is considered inauspicious. The reason for this is that during this period, the focus is shifted from material wealth and prosperity to the memory of ancestors and spiritual balance. Buying a new broom at this time is like welcoming new material wealth, which is believed to disturb the peace of the soul of ancestors. That is why it is advised that the family should use the old broom only and do not bring a new broom home until Pitru Paksha ends.

Salt (adds flavor, but disrupts balance)

Salt enhances the taste of every food and has a deep significance in Hindu traditions. But during Shraddha rituals, emphasis is laid on keeping the food sattvik and simple. It is believed that bringing new salt during Pitru Paksha can create imbalance and discord in the house. Salt is also considered a symbol of ego and lust, and it is important to keep them under control during this period. Sattvik food is offered to the ancestors during Shraddha, which does not contain excess salt and spices. Buying new salt is considered to reduce this sattvikta. That is why it is said to keep enough salt in the house before the beginning of this period and do not buy new salt until Pitru Paksha ends.

Mustard oil (associated with grief and negativity)

In India, mustard oil is commonly used for food and massage. But in religious beliefs, it is associated with rituals related to mourning and death. Bringing new mustard oil into the house during the days of Pitru Paksha is considered to attract negative energy. It is said that it increases the atmosphere of mourning in the house and affects the peace of the soul of the ancestors. Since this time is already associated with the remembrance of ancestors, bringing mustard oil home or using it excessively on these days is not considered auspicious.

During the 15 days of Pitru Paksha, more emphasis is given on the memory of ancestors and peace of their souls than on material things. This is the reason why it is forbidden to bring new broom, new salt and new mustard oil in the house during this period. The purpose of these traditions is that the family shifts its priorities from material possessions to spiritual balance and service of ancestors.
