People are only just discovering how frequently they should be washing their mattress protector. The often-forgotten part of bedding requires regular cleaning, and experts are now encouraging people to clean their bedding more often to enhance their sleep hygiene.
While changing bedding should be a staple in any cleaning routine, the mattress protector might be overlooked as it's usually hidden beneath other bed sheets, meaning it doesn't come into direct contact with skin. However, it still needs to be cleaned regularly. This is particularly important for people with allergies or sensitive skin, as washing the mattress protector can help prevent skin irritation.
WinstonsBeds experts are now saying the "neglected" item needs to be washed as much as every two months.

Rebecca Swain, a mattress expert at WinstonsBeds, said: "Mattress protectors often get neglected because people forget they're there or they won't fit in the washing machine with the rest of the bedding.
"Although protectors don't need to be washed as often as your bedsheets, it's still important to give them a good clean every other month to maintain your sleep hygiene.
"There are exceptions to this rule - if you've been ill, are struggling with allergies, allow pets in your bed or have had guests over, make sure to wash the protector more frequently."
Rebecca's advice was backed up by social media users, with one person suggesting the frequent washing has been a game changer for allergies.
They wrote: "I was today years old when I learned you should wash your mattress protector every two months. This will likely be life changing for my allergies."
The "significant investment" made in a good quality mattress means it needs frequent cleaning and, according to Rebecca, the bedsheets will benefit from this change.
Rebecca went on to say: "Not only does a clean mattress protector prevent bacteria from clinging to the bedsheets, but it also protects your mattress from damage.
"Mattresses can be a significant investment, and protectors are essential for keeping them in good condition. However, if the protector is dirty, it can eventually affect the mattress underneath.
"By taking good care of a mattress protector it should last you around two years, however not washing it regularly will significantly shorten its lifespan."
Best way to clean your mattress protectorAlways start by reading the manufacturer’s care instructions. Most mattress protectors are machine washable, but some may have special requirements.
After you have read the manual, take the mattress protector off your bed. Shake it outside to remove dust, hair, and debris.
If there are stains, spot clean them with a gentle stain remover or a mix of mild detergent and water. Blot, don’t rub, to avoid spreading the stain.
If your mattress protector is OK to go in the washing machine, choose a lukewarm and gentle setting to avoid damaging the item.
If possible, air drying is gentlest and helps preserve the protector’s shape and waterproofing.
