BBC Great British Sewing Bee fans 'not happy' after 'boring' challenge

BBC viewers were left underwhelmed by the latest instalment of The Great British Sewing Bee.

In the episode aired on Tuesday (July 29), the sewers tackled a variety of tasks designed to pay tribute to iconic fashion figures.

The challenges ranged from recreating Diane von Furstenberg's celebrated wrap dress to emulating Vivienne Westwood's punk aesthetic using household textiles. The contestants had their work cut out for them.

For the grand finale, they were tasked with crafting opulent pieces inspired by Versace, but one participant was unimpressed by the renowned designer's signature style.

Caz, 59, decided to put her own twist on the final challenge with a Wizard of Oz-themed creation, which ultimately led to her victory, reports Wales Online.

Despite the judges' approval, not all viewers were convinced, with one criticising: "Most of these dresses are not very Versace to be honest."

Another viewer remarked: "The Caz dress was more The Waltons than Versace" while another added: "Yasmin should have won that."

Echoing the discontent, someone else exclaimed: "What a s***e garment of the week."

One viewer expressed disappointment, saying: "That was the most boring garment of the week. Yes it was made well but just boring to look at."

Meanwhile, another pointed out: "Easy to win garment of the week when everyone is working with hard fabrics and you make a dorothy dress instead."

One viewer chimed in with support, saying: "I'm with Caz...not really a Versace fan. I wouldn't choose to wear it. I like her Dorothy take."

Another was keen on the design: "I'm gonna need that Dorothy dress."

During the programme, judge Patrick Grant highlighted several iconic Versace elements for the contestants to draw inspiration from, such as the medusa head, black and gold, tropical prints, and bondage-style fashion. However, Caz had a different vision.

She openly expressed her distaste for the classic black and gold Versace look, stating: "I don't really like that early black and gold Versace, it's not me."

While presenting her gingham fabric, she acknowledged it didn't exactly embody the legendary designer's signature style.

When probed about her creative direction, Caz explained: "Well, I'm not a huge Versace fan, but when I read up, they said that Donatella gets inspiration from anywhere and everywhere."

She added: "I watch a lot of films, so this is inspired by the Dorothy dress in the Wizard of Oz."

Caz's unique approach paid off as she triumphed in the initial wrap dress challenge, an achievement that left her feeling 'validated'.

Unfortunately, the episode also saw the departure of Glendora from the contest, as judges Paul and Esme Young decided it was time for her to leave.
