Chandigarh: Punjabi singers YoYo Honey Singh and Karan Aujla – who were summoned for offensive lyrics in their songs – on Monday failed to appear before the Punjab State Women’s Commission stating they are currently abroad for their respective pre-scheduled shoots.
Commission Took Suo Motu Cognisance of Songs
It may be recalled that the commission had taken on August 7 last, a suo motu cognisance of the objectionable lyrics of Aujla’s "MF Gabru" and Honey Singh’s "Millionaire" songs and summoned them to appear before it here on Monday.
Taking a serious note of lyrics of the said songs sung by the two singers, which, she held were "derogatory and objectionable’’ against women, the Commission chairperson Raj Lali Gill had also written to Director General of Police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav, demanding an investigation into the matter and the action taken report in the same.
Chairperson Warns of Ban on Such Songs
She had also held that such language cannot be tolerated and such songs will be banned. Stating that singers are the voice of the society, she said that while on one hand they say they love their mother and on the other hand they use such abusive and offensive language for mothers in their songs.
Punjab Women’s Commission Seeks Action Against Honey Singh & Karan Aujla Over Derogatory LyricsHowever, Gill said that the both the singers had spoken to her telephonically and they had apologised for the lyrics in their songs and also about their inability to appear before the panel stating that they are currently abroad for their pre-scheduled shoots and that they will appear before the commission upon their return to India.
Lawyers to Submit Replies Soon
She said that the singers also held that they respect women and had no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiments. They informed her that in the meantime, their lawyers will submit their replies in the matter in a day or two, she added.
