Continuous heavy rainfall has left vast swathes of Northeast India reeling under floods and landslides, claiming at least 36 lives and impacting over 5.5 lakh people. Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram are among the worst hit states, with severe damage to infrastructure, displacement of thousands, and disrupted connectivity.

Union minister JP Nadda urged BJP workers to “provide all possible assistance in accordance with the issued guidelines.” Meanwhile, Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the Centre’s response, saying he hopes Prime Minister Narendra Modi opens the “floodgates” of the PM CARES fund.

Have a look at his entire statement here:

In Assam, over 5.35 lakh residents across 22 districts have been affected, with 15 rivers breaching danger levels. Eleven deaths have been confirmed. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited flood-hit Lakhimpur, promising full support and relief.

Sarma also met Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma in Guwahati to address the city’s recurring waterlogging. Blaming upstream hill-cutting in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi, Sarma said both states would collaborate on solutions. “NESAC will carry out satellite mapping to study water flow and land use. Data is expected within three months,” Sangma said after the meeting.

In Sikkim’s Mangan district, a landslide near Lachen killed three army personnel and left six missing. “Rescue efforts are ongoing under difficult conditions,” a defence official told the press. Over 1,600 stranded tourists have been evacuated, while access to key sites like Gurudongmar and Lachung remains cut off due to collapsed bridges and washed-out roads.

Arunachal Pradesh reported 10 deaths across 23 districts, with flooding displacing hundreds. Governor K T Parnaik urged residents to stay alert in landslide-prone zones.

In Manipur, nearly 20,000 people were displaced as embankments broke and homes were inundated. Joint rescue teams evacuated stranded individuals, including medical students in Imphal.

Tripura saw slight relief with water levels receding. Yet, over 10,000 remain in relief camps, as per Disaster Management official Sarat Das. Mizoram, meanwhile, has shut schools and reported five deaths. “A total of 212 roads have been blocked due to mudslides,” said officials, with refugees and local residents among the casualties.
